One of the first major projects I got after leaving the university was actually at the university. A colleague received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Center for Research Resources, and needed a web site. This site was to become sort of a clearinghouse for bioinformatics in New Mexico.
An important feature of the web site included a PHP/MySQL-based calendar system.
The colleague who directed this project is no longer at the university, and the program has evolved into something else.

Non-Profit

One of the first site’s I designed for someone else was for No Strings Theatre Company. Friends of mine, fellow professors at the university, built a theatre in Las Cruces after they retired. I served on their Board of Directors for a while.
They needed a web site for taking reservations, soliciting volunteers, providing information about auditions, and for displaying reviews of their productions.
Once again, I called upon my friend Beverly at Moon and Back Graphics to help create the graphics for No Strings. I designed the site layout and created all of the forms used on the site. The initial forms were perl/cgi-based and included reservations and volunteers. We have since moved to php-based form processing.
I maintained the web site for quite some time, and eventually turned that over to No Strings. We are gearing up for a major redesign and update of the web site, so keep an eye out. And if you are ever in Las Cruces and want to see quality theatre, you won’t want to miss No Strings Theatre Company at the Black Box Theatre.

Personal

Midnight Enchantment ... This was my first domain. I wanted to consolidate Tamalita’s Casa and Fairy Alma’s Kingdom. Again, this was an early site and I did not create the graphics. Beverly at Moon and Back Graphics created a web set entitled "Midnight in the Garden" with hummingbirds and beautiful flowers. She was the one who helped me come up with the name Midnight Enchantment and I used her web set for the site. I don’t happen to have a screen shot of that original design.
I eventually managed to create my own graphics for Midnight Enchantment using the beautiful faery art of Amy Brown (with permission of course).
I went through a phase in which I was fascinated by sparklies and floaties. I guess I’m still in that phase, but don’t really use them anymore. This web site features sparkling floaties.
I used to love internet treasure hunts, one of my favorites used to be Lady in Black’s Mystical Castle. My vision for Midnight Enchantment is to turn it into a treasure hunt site. However, I never seem to have time to work on this site! How sad ...

I advised a few students groups while at the university, including Ceres Women’s Fraternity. They needed a web site. So ...
Actually, I did not design the graphics for this site, but had the customization done by Beverly at Moon and Back Graphics. Ceres is the patron Goddess of Agriculture and Ceres Women’s Fraternity included women with an interest in agriculture. Many of them were majoring in agricultural studies. The colors were lavendar and gold. The rose and scroll were their symbols. When Beverly showed me this web site, it literally took my breath away.
My involvement with this site was in layout, content, and maintenance.

I taught classes in animal nutrition at the university. Most of the classes were for graduate (Master’s and PhD) students. The one undergraduate course that I taught was a senior-level Animal Nutrition. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching this class and had a fairly extensive web site for the students. At some point, we began using WebCT and although this particular course was taught live, I was able to transfer most of the site content into the WebCT system. Anyway, this was one of the final revisions of the web site for the course. All of my course materials in addition to other resources were accessible to the students through this web site.
I was still using tables here, but definitely depended on CSS. Because this was used by students who had varying web skills and internet access, I kept the site very simple. The most interesting feature was probably the navigational menu. The mouseover included eggs that sort of looked like chocolate chip cookies. Hmmmm. Nutrition?
This is another early example of a site created completely from scratch.

This was my professional web site while I taught at the university. This site included my professional resume and information about my research and courses. This was probably when I first began using CSS. The navigation bar included mouseover effects. Woo hoo. Also, my favorite color is purple. Can you tell? Actually, as sites for university professors go, this one was pretty good. This was one of the first sites I created completely from scratch.
